Sturdy membranes that allow protons to pass through them are the most important components of a fuel cell. At the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, doctoral student Samuel Rey-Mermet combined cerium oxide with a hexagonal nickel grid to make a sturdy substance which allows the hydrogen ions to move freely.
