Abstract
Synthetic procedures and conformational features of thermodn. stable self-filled partial cone pyridinocalix[4]arenes were reviewed. Single crystal X-ray analyses, 1H NMR characteristics (in comparison with appropriate model cone conformers), and MM2 calcns. provide evidence that the heteroat. substituent (pyridine, pyridine-N-oxide, or quinoline) attached to the inverted phenol moiety lies in, and effectively fills, the calix cavity produced by the remaining three aryl rings, in a sort of locked "self-inclusion" complex. This property is absent in partial cone structures devoid of p-tert-Bu substituents, confirming the stabilizing effect of CH... interactions in the self-inclusion process.
