Field experiments were conducted to harvest maximum crude protein from space-planted as well as close grown tobacco crops by imposing various management practices viz. topping, N-levels and change in type of tobacco. The ratooning ability of a chewing tobacco line 47-75 and ten bidi tobacco varieties was examined. The experimental results indicated that there was a critical stage of growth ranging from 70-90 days after transplanting for harvesting maximum (488 kg/ha) crude protein from tobacco leaf. The influence of topping as well as N-levels was not significant. The close grown (3 lakhs plants/ha) tobacco crop when fertilized with 600 kg N/ha, exhibited maximum of 25 q/ha crude protein potential at 90 days growth. Among present day cultivated varieties GT-4 had better ratooning ability as compared to others.
