Abstract
An expression for detection limits in atomic absorption spectrometry, using a continuum primary source, is deduced from fluctuation principles. An experimental set-up which employs a high-pressure xenon lamp and a.c. scanning of a spectral line is described, which greatly reduces the effect of instabilities in the primary source. The measurements with this set-up on Cu (3247 Å) are in agreement with the calculations. An absorption of 0.03 % is measured, equivalent to a concentration of 4 × 109 atoms per cm3 in the flame.
