Femtosecond pulses deposit the energy onto the target material faster than thermal diffusion transports the energy away from the ablation area. This allows ablated materials to be heated to much higher temperatures compared to nanosecond laser pulses. The timescale of this process is in the subpicosecond (10-12 sec) range, in contrast to thermal diffusion of 10-11 sec.
