The European Council for Plasticisers and Intermediates (ECPI) has issued a statement in response to the publication of the first REACH authorization list (CW 17 February 2010(http://chemicalwatch.com/6538/reach-authorisation-process-rolls-into-motion) ). The group notes that the low molecular weight phthalate bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which appears on the list, is currently produced by two ECPI members. The other two phthalates on the list, benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are not produced by its members.
The statement adds that the main European DEHP producer Arkema has announced its intention to apply for authorisation and the company believes that current uses, which it says are covered in the substance’s REACH registration dossier, will be granted the necessary authorisation as the risk to human health and environment can be adequately controlled. The application for authorisation deadline is February 2015.
