In natural waters, colour is due mainly to the presence of dissolved organic matter originating from soil and decaying vegetable matter. Colour is reported in Platinum/Cobalt units (PCU) or Hazen Units (HU). As a guide, tea has a colour of about 2500 PCU, few people could detect a colour of 3 PCU. There is no health based guideline limit for colour. An aesthetic limit has been set to minimise consumer concern.
The limit for colour in drinking water is £ 15 PCU.
