The plasticizer food scandal in Taiwan is far from over. Let's take a look at how the toxic chemical substance was found on the island.
The biggest food scandal in thirty years hit Taiwan on May 23rd. Dehp, an industry plasticizer is at its center. It was found out two months ago by a woman quality inspector surnamed Yang.
Three months ago, she received some raw material from Tainan municipality of lactic acid bacteria or LAB, which is claimed to have fat losing effects. But a series of tests showed Ms Yang something was abnormal.
As a mother of two, she paid special attention to food for children. In a routine check on probiotics, she also found something unusual.
The findings propelled the 52-year-old mom to continue with the investigation, which led to the identification of a plasticizer prohibited in food. Its consumption can cause cancer and distort hormone balance. The probiotics tests showed a density of plasticizer at 600 parts per million, far surpassing the Taiwan daily standard of 1.029 ppm.
The plasticizer was then traced by Taiwan food authorities to Yushen Spice Company.
To protect Ms Yang, Taiwan food safety authority has not revealed any more details about her. The authority has also decided to give her a reward and encourage people to follow her example.
